For several years now, Arkema is strongly engaged in a process to improve its CSR performance, with the objective of integrating sustainability into its practices in collaboration with its stakeholders.
Our CSR approach is regularly assessed by extra-financial rating agencies and our clients on ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) criteria basis.
These ratings, which are especially interesting for investors, confirm the adequacy of our CSR approach and rank us among the best performing companies in our sector.
SAM & DJSI
The SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) is an annual evaluation of companies’ sustainability practices. Each year over 7,300 companies around the world are assessed. The SAM CSA focuses on criteria that are both industry-specific and financially material, and has been doing so since 1999.
In 2020, Arkema joined the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) World and Europe. These indices include the top performing companies in terms of CSR based on the ratings of the Standard & Poor's SAM non-financial questionnaire.
The composition of Dow Jones sustainability indices is determined once a year on the basis of stringent environmental, social and governance criteria. Only the top 10% of the world's best companies assessed in each sector are included in the DJSI World, while the top 20% of the best companies headquartered in Europe are included in the DJSI Europe.
In 2020, Arkema joined the indices* in the following ranks:
- 6th chemical company in the DJSI World,
- 2nd chemical company of the DJSI Europe
*Among 114 assessed companies in the “Chemicals” category.
Beyond the DJSI World, Arkema has joined the Sustainability Year Book 2021 of S&P Global. This ranking recognizes the best-performing companies in terms of social responsibility among their peers in the sector. Arkema has received the Bronze Class distinction, which ranks us among the six leaders in the Chemical sector.
Vigeo-Eiris et CAC® 40 ESG
Vigeo-Eiris, a subsidiary of Moody's Corporation, uses environmental, social, business ethics, human rights, human resources and governance criteria to rate the CSR performance of companies.
Since 2015, Arkema is a constituent of the Euronext Vigeo-Eiris Eurozone 120 and Euronext Vigeo-Eiris Europe 120 indexes, which gather the top 120 publicly traded companies in terms of corporate responsibility in the Euro area and in Europe, according to the rating agency's ESG criteria.
In 2020, Arkema joined the new CAC® 40 ESG index on the Paris Stock Exchange, which identifies the 40 companies within the CAC® Large 60 index that demonstrate the best environmental, social and governance practices.
CDP, an international non-profit organization which analyzes the integration of the environmental dimension in the strategies of over 8 000 companies around the world, has assessed Arkema in the following two major areas:
- Climate change: Arkema received a “A -“ rating in 2020.
- Water management: Arkema received a “B” rating in 2020.
EcoVadis rating is mainly monitored by our clients. It is based on the evaluation of the quality of a company's CSR management system through its policies, actions and results.
Four themes are covered:
- Labor and human rights
- Business ethics
- Sustainable procurement
EcoVadis also allows us to assess the CSR performance of our suppliers and thus encourage a responsible approach throughout our supply chain.
Arkema ranks among the 1% top performing companies in its sector since 2014.
MSCI measures companies resilience to long-term, industry material environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks. Their methodology is to identify industry leaders and laggards according to their exposure to ESG risks and how well they manage those risks relative to peers.
MSCI, has assigned an « A » rating to Arkema since 2017.
Sustainalytics’ ESG Risk Ratings measure company’s exposure to its industry specific material ESG risks and how well a company is managing those risks.
In October 2020, Arkema received an ESG Risk Rating of 26.3 and was assessed by Sustainalytics to be at medium risk of experiencing material financial impacts from ESG factors.
Arkema’s ESG Risk Rating place us in the 14th percentile of the chemical industry assessed by Sustainalytics.

ISS ESG assesses the ESG performance of companies providing investors with in-depth information to effectively integrate sustainability into their investment decision.
ISS ESG has awarded Arkema a "C+" rating since 2019 and places us in the 1st decile globally.
The FTSE4Good Index is based on the FSTE ESG Rating, which takes into account a company's exposure to ESG issues and a comparison with peers in its sector. Only companies with a rating above a certain threshold are included in the index.
Arkema is member of FTSE4Good index since 2015.
