Safety management systems are active for all the Arkema group. Various plan frame their implementation: AIMS audit and REX program of incident experience feedback. Specific safety audits are performed as well.
Safety, environment and quality – AIMS, the all-in-one audit
The Arkema Integrated Management System (AIMS) combines in a single audit all the audits performed by the Arkema group in relation to safety, the environment and quality. It combines the requirements specific to the Arkema group and to relevant norms (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 et OHSAS 18001).
This all-in-one method has a two-fold benefit – it reflects the corporate culture of the Group and provides a consistent framework for all its safety management processes.
In order to obtain external certification, the AIMS audits are performed by mixed teams which include auditors from the Arkema group and auditors from a third party certification organization. AIMS audits are conducted every three years and follow-up audits every year.
This new method is well established: in 2018, 74% of the Group's sites had undergone an AIMS audit within the previous three years, versus 69% of sites in 2017 and 63% in 2016.
The 2025 target is for 100% of the sites to have had an AIMS audit whithin the previous three years.
Specialized safety audits
Every year the Arkema group performs a multitude of audits outside the framework of AIMS :
- Operational safety audits: construction site audits, pre-start-up reviews, simplified AIMS audits for smaller sites, operational safety audits about topic such as mechanical integrity or explosive atmospheres (ATEX).
- Process safety audits: among the various components, these include fire protection, post-incident audits, etc.
- Service provider and logistics audits: transportation firms and outside warehouses are inspected and evaluated. These audits are performed in addition to other audits conducted by third parties such as the Safety & Quality Assessment System (SQAS) or the Chemical Distribution Institute (CDI). Some packaging is also assessed.
- Safety support: this action is provided to some sites and is designed to share the support team’s assessment of its accident history and HSE (Hygiene Safety Environment) with the facility’s management. An action plan is then defined and its actions monitored.
The REX feedback plan organizes the exchange of experiences related to incidents in order to prevent their re-occurrence. This exchange is performed at a company-wide level and involves all the different networks (geographical, activities and technological). In the event of a significant incident, these networks are used to issue a safety alert and to implement a corrective actions plan on all sites of the Group where such an incident might occur.
