Oleris® advanced bio-materials are made from oil pressed from castor beans. Castor is uniquely non-competitive with food in contrast with many other bio-sources. As a founding member of the Pragati Initiative for sustainable castor farming, Arkema empowers farmers and their communities to increase their income while practicing agriculture consistent with efficient utilization of water and land resources, improved waste management, and a high standard of human rights protections. Oleris® advanced oleochemicals are Carbon Neutral (ISO 14040). Cradle to gate climate change impact is climate positive with no need for carbon compensation: The biogenic (atmospheric) CO2 absorbed during the growth of the castor bean is more than the cumulative CO2 emission equivalents associated with the entire manufacturing process.

By integrating Oleris® advanced solutions, you can significantly lower your greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil resources, thus lowering your product carbon footprint, supporting your corporate climate targets and compliance with evolving regulations.

Castor is an inherently low risk feedstock thanks to its unique properties. It is non-competitive with food unlike many other bio-sources. A resilient crop, it grows in marginal soils while also improving soil health. Socially, castor offers farmers a reliable income, and is easy to grow, store, and sell thanks to its long shelf life.

The world’s first sustainable castor farming initiative

For several decades Arkema has been a key supporter of castor farming communities in India where most of the world’s castor supply originates from.

As a founding member of the Sustainable Castor Association, Arkema has been driving the Pragati Initiative for sustainable castor farming in India. Arkema empowers farmers and their communities to increase their income while practicing agriculture consistent with efficient utilization of water and land resources, improved waste management and fair labor conditions.

Our vision is to continue driving impact by scaling up from 8,000 to 100,000 farms by 2030.

The use of each kilogram (kg) of Oleris® advanced bio-materials instead of a petrochemical alternative typically represents a CO2 impact savings of more than 2 kilogram (kg) equivalent.
