Mastering paper coating techniques

To improve the coating of paper and cardboard, we apply the latest breakthroughs in the synthesis of hydrosoluble polymers. Our product range is built on unique expertise in mastering techniques related to the viscosity (rheology) of coating colors applied to the surface of paper. Understanding and controlling rheology and viscosity can lead to significant cost savings and quality enhancements in paper and board coating as well as in the deinking process. With this in mind, we offer solutions to control and optimize coating color rheology, improve water retention, and comply with food contact requirements. Our latest developments for the Paper & Board industry include a new generation of bio-based sustainable dispersants and a patented technology designed to increase deinking yield in flotation processes.

Coated board, printability, water retention and quality food contact approvals

To meet the sustainability requirements and the new regulation about plastics, the need for food packaging increases every year. Further adjustments are needed in paperboard production to follow this plastic removal such as new formulations, barrier coatings with new rheology behaviors, specific coating devices, together with food contact compliance. To do so we propose packaging coating additive including a special range of curtain coating additive.

Among these solutions, two key products stand out: Rheocoat™ 27, a thickener and water retention agent that ensures excellent printability and food contact compliance for paper and board coating; and Rheocarb™ 121, a steric rheology modifier that provides superior control for coated board applications, supporting high-quality finishes and sustainability goals.

Coated Paper, decreasing coat weight while keeping paper properties, reducing total cost in use

Challenged by market demand and competition paper makers need to reduce cost while offering same printability and paper properties. As an example reducing coat weight can contribute to achieved savings.

To help achieve this, Rheocoat™ 93 and Rheocoat™ 66 SN are essential solutions. Both act as thickeners and water retention agents for paper and board coating, enabling reduced coat weight while maintaining paper properties and lowering total cost in use.

Dispersants

Clay, Talcum, CaCO3, TiO2 can be available in dry form. They need to be dispersed prior to be used in coating colors.

A full range of dedicated dispersants has been developed to disperse all types of minerals

Dispersant can be used to disperse the coating color to avoid aggregates formation and  improve screening process.

To meet these needs, Topsperse™ GX N is a high-performance dispersing agent for coating color pigments, ensuring smooth dispersion and process efficiency. Spersio™ P 551 represents a new generation of bio-based dispersants, combining sustainability with excellent dispersion properties for mineral pigments.

For whiter paper

As the world’s third largest producer of hydrogen peroxide (or oxygenated water) and the European leader in sodium chlorate, today the Arkema Group is a major supplier of pulp and paper bleaching products under the Alpure® and Albone® brands. It has production facilities in Asia, Europe and North America.

Stable, colorless and biodegradable, hydrogen peroxide does not produce any by-products.

Paper de-inking

Arkema's liptol de-inking agents are made from fatty alcohols specially developed for paper de-inking. They help achieve high brightness while minimizing fiber loss. The liptol range also has a beneficial effect on the following parameters:

  • cleanliness of the paste
  • performance of de-inking cell
  • stickies (impurities)
  • formation of deposits
  • operation of the paper machine
