Bertrand, fluorochemicals process manager
What has been your career path?
I went to the Ecole Centrale in Lille and then did my national service abroad in Morocco as a physics and chemistry teacher. In 1981, I got a job with Ugine Kuhlmann, where I worked as a process engineer at the technical center in Lyon. In 1987, I moved up to the position of senior production engineer at Lannemezan, and then in 1993 I became the process department manager at Pierre-Bénite. In 2001, I worked at the headquarters in Paris as an industrial director. Since 2006, I have held the position of process manager in Lyon.
What is your typical working day like?
No two days are the same. I lead meetings, take part in projects, go into the field, make work trips to other countries... I watch out for technical problems in the production units and coordinate with other plants to ensure continuous improvement. As part of new projects, I work in close collaboration with the R&D and technical departments. Lastly, I collaborate closely with the business units to meet and anticipate their needs.
What do you like about your job?
The technical aspect of the subjects I deal with, the variety of subjects, and the fact that my work never ceases to change. Everyday brings new challenges. I also like encountering new professions and cultures, and this job requires me to travel. I spend a week each month traveling for work. That is another enjoyable aspect of this job. I am currently in China for three and a half months to participate in the start-up of a new production unit.
What are your qualities with respect to your job?
Having been an engineer for more than 30 years, I have technical expertise in the various different aspects of the job (projects, processes, production). Plus, I like getting people to work together. Lastly, I think being open-minded helps me find resolutions to some situations.
What are your career plans for afterwards?
I no longer think in terms of career plans, and my current BU still provides me with plenty of fascinating projects.
What do you like about Arkema?
This company has allowed me to grow, and in a very congenial way! I have never felt bored here. I have held different positions and worked in a variety of places. Furthermore, it is a company that is always moving forward with a certain stability. It's a well-managed business.
Is there a particular memory that stands out from your time in Arkema or linked to your job?
The start-up of the Panda project in China, where thanks to team spirit and perfect solidarity between the different entities involved we were able to find the required solutions.
I am a pragmatic optimist. I would like to be a better listener with others.
One of your qualities and one flaw?
I am naturally curious, the desire to learn has always made me progress. But that is no reason not to have a good laugh every day!
