Case introduction

Qarun Petroleum Company (QPC) is an operating company of Egyptian General Petroleum Corporation (EGPC) and currently operates on key onshore assets in QPC-Apache JV. This case study focuses on onshore oilfield asset where water was injected to increase pressure and stimulate the production. Downhole water injection may potentially cause problems with scaling due to incompatibility of treatment chemicals. Facing this problem, QPC has adopted an efficient bacterial management that addresses the compatibility with formation water.

The field is characterized by formation water hardness of up to 10,000 ppm Ca2+. Hydrocarbon production in this field utilizes water-flood technologies with the previously used biocide injected continuously via the slipstream through the annulus. Mineral scale deposition continued to be a problem as the biocide in use at the time proved unable to mitigate deposition in the injection lines and pumps, even though it was still able to control microbial growth.
