Scarpa, the Italian manufacturer of outdoor equipment, recently unveiled its Green Manifesto, stating its global approach to sustainability and responsible manufacturing. Arkema, supplying its range of Advanced Bio-Circular Pebax® Rnew® thermoplastic elastomers made from castor beans, is fully associated in this approach.

Founded in the foothills of the Dolomite Mountains, in the Asolo/Montebelluna region, an area long known for its high quality handcrafted footwear, SCARPA has grown into a renowned manufacturer of footwear for mountaineering, trekking, hiking, alpine running, climbing and skiing. The company remains at the forefront of innovation and is now stating its commitment for a more sustainable industry.

The spirit of the Green Manifesto

The Green Manifesto is a programmatic commitment outlining the company's sustainability principles and consolidating them with new initiatives geared to bringing SCARPA into line with the highest international standards.

For us, this manifesto is a chance to take stock of what SCARPA is today, so that we can imagine what it will be tomorrow. Living in and for the mountains, we've spontaneously developed a culture of respect for the environment, and now we want to give this a clearer structure, so that our values can become a concrete, effective contribution to safeguarding nature and the wellbeing of society."

The first actions have already been implemented this year: 100% of the company's Italian headquarter staff in Asolo (Tv) have received training on sustainable innovation, and a group of 16 Sustainability Ambassadors, spread across every department, is now available to answer employees' questions about sustainability issues.

Pebax® Rnew®: The perfect fit for a sustainable strategy

SCARPA continues on its path towards increasingly sustainable and environmentally friendly production: a commitment that the company has always pursued, even when the awareness of the media and public was not as high as today.

SCARPA believes this is the most authentic way to be sustainable: making quality products that last, extending their life cycle whenever possible. It was made possible thanks to a strong commitment to research & innovation combined with Pebax® Rnew® materials from Arkema and their exceptional level of performance. The selection of Pebax® Rnew® materials was reinforced by their bio-circular and sustainable origin, making them the perfect choice to reduce SCARPA’s environmental impact and assert its values without compromise.

Arkema is a long-standing and loyal partner of SCARPA and the collaboration dates back to the birth of their world-renowned Pebax® thermoplastic elastomers, whose 40th anniversary is celebrated this year.

Scarpa was also a pioneer in 2007 when selecting Arkema’s Advanced Bio-Circular Pebax® Rnew® polymers for its footwear, maintaining the high performance and taking a step towards a more sustainable sourcing of materials.

How do you see the relationship with Arkema and its evolution in the future?

Sandro Parisotto

Chief Executive Officer, SCARPA:

“The long-standing partnership between SCARPA and Arkema is one of great collaboration and continuous evolution to achieve common goals. Specifically, the two companies are working together to minimize production waste and increase its recycling. At the same time, another major commitment is about managing the recycling of plastic material at the end of the product's life. These are two very important challenges that the whole industry will have to face in the coming years, in order to achieve higher and higher levels of sustainability.”

François Tanguy

European Consumer Market Manager, Arkema:

“The Green Manifesto is a great initiative by SCARPA: we are very proud to help them reaching their commitments by the use of our sustainable materials. Looking forward, we are investing in a world-scale bio-factory dedicated to the manufacture of bio-based monomers and polymers, and we launched the Virtucycle initiative for recycling post-industrial and post-consumer polymers: We feel ready to support SCARPA for their next challenges!”
