On September 22, 2016, at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, over 100 nations, including the USA and all member nations of the EU, called for adopting a new amendment to the Montreal Protocol to phase down hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) globally.

A number of industrial countries and private donors also committed over $80 million to help the developing world implement these amendments.  Many international companies and associations have jointly issued a strong statement of support, and Arkema is proud to be listed among these forward looking organizations.

Arkema has long been a vocal advocate of a global approach to phasing down HFCs under the Montreal Protocol. As a leading producer of fluorine chemistry, Arkema is developing the next generation of climate friendly fluorogases - HFOs -, which will make the HFC phasedown possible. HFCs have served an important role in moving away from ozone depleting CFCs and HCFCs, but HFOs are the next generation products due to their excellent performance characteristics and lower global warming potential.

Today’s action demonstrates that broad international consensus exists for amending the Montreal Protocol to include HFCs. Arkema strongly supports an HFC amendment based on caps and phasedown approach, and we call on the Parties to the Montreal Protocol to adopt such at their October meeting in Kigali, Rwanda.
