At Arkema, we’ve been on a mission to help recent college graduates gain critical experience and benefit from the knowledge of those already on the frontlines of manufacturing.
Over twenty years ago, we launched our Developing Engineer (DE) program, an immersive work experience in a chemical manufacturing plant.
The program was designed to expose engineers just starting their career journey to the many different pathways available to them, while also providing critical training and mentorship to ensure success in their role.
But make no mistake, this is not a job shadow experience. Instead, DE participants are key contributors in the manufacturing plant working alongside senior engineers, research scientists, plant personnel, and company teams to optimize operations and meet business goals.
“It’s inspiring to be part of a company that takes such an active role in the professional development of its people,” said Matthew Engel, who recently joined the DE program as a plant process engineer. “As a DE, I was quickly paired with a mentor who empowered me to get involved with their day-to-day operations – from facilitating Continuous Improvement meetings and participating in problem-solving sessions, to assisting with things like P&ID verification and contractor management for an ongoing reactor installation project. Everyone I work with during my DE journey genuinely enjoys their job, feels valued by the company, and takes pride in their role making sustainable products used by millions of people each day. It’s pretty rewarding to know that the work we do helps improve the environment and creates a better future for the communities we serve.”
“The most valuable moments from my time in the DE program have been getting out into the field, gaining on-site experience, and building relationships,” said Nia Goddard, who is currently in the DE program as a plant process engineer. “Your first professional role can be intimidating, but everyone I’ve met within Arkema has been so supportive and there are a ton of network groups that can help connect you with others outside your role. I’d encourage any aspiring engineer to take advantage of this critical growth period, step outside your comfort zone, and use every day as an opportunity to learn something new. My experience as a DE has been an important step in my engineering career, and the trainings have given me new confidence to tackle whatever comes next.”
Arkema’s DE program is perfectly aligned with our current era of rapid innovation, where success often comes down to who is better equipped to navigate change. According to LinkedIn, “adaptability” was among the most in-demand skills for 2024, and companies are actively seeking people with resilient mindsets who are familiar with operating in agile environments.
“I’ve benefitted from tremendous lateral growth during my time in the DE program, helping combine the theoretical lessons I learned in school with the practical, real-world skills I acquired from being on-site and working alongside different departments,” said Katie Hawkins, current DE program participant as a plant process engineer. “There’s a real sense of community within Arkema, and it’s full of people/groups who truly care about your job satisfaction and professional development. I’ve learned that change is never easy, but exposing yourself to new environments and getting comfortable with change early in your career can open new doors for you in the future.”
Arkema recruits for the DE program from our intern and co-op population and from select Universities with strong engineering programs across the United States. We look for candidates who are self-motivated team players with excellent analytical skills and a passion for continuous learning.
Above all, the DE program aims to attract problem solvers – people who are unafraid to ask questions and try new things. Recruitment for positions starting in 2025 will begin in Fall 2024.
