Arkema’s Production Unit in La Chambre
The Arkema plant in La Chambre produces oxygenated solvents for paints and varnishes, lubrication additives, cosmetics, personal hygiene, drugs, and amines mainly for the pharmaceutical, agrochemical, and automotive markets. The plant’s products are shipped worldwide.
The La Chambre plant dates back to 1929, when the Société Industrielle des Dérivés de l’Acétylène [Industrial Company of Acetylene Derivatives] decided to build a plant dedicated to the manufacture of acetone in the Maurienne valley. In 1946 and 1950, the La Chambre site expanded its production to oxygenated solvents and amines. With a workforce of 170 employees, the plant, which is part of the Arkema Group, contributes to the economic vitality of the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
Activities of the La Chambre Plant
The Arkema teams at the La Chambre plant manufacture oxygenated solvents from acetone, which are used in the manufacture of many everyday products (such as paints, varnishes, inks, dyes, glues, adhesives, oils, drugs, perfumes, lipsticks, shower gels, shampoos, etc.).
The site also produces commodity amines and specialty amines. These high-value-added products supply the pharmaceutical (synthesis of active ingredients), automotive (foundry), and phytosanitary (herbicide, crop treatment) industries, and others.
Classified Seveso high threshold, Arkema La Chambre complies with the European Seveso III Directive on major accidents involving dangerous substances. The plant is committed to a process of continuous improvement to reduce the impact of its activities on the environment and reduce its energy consumption.
As part of the Common Ground® program, the La Chambre plant conducts numerous awareness-raising actions with elected officials, local residents, and school groups.
- Open house days at the plant
- Presentations and testimonies in schools
