Molecular sieves for oxygen concentrators: high-efficiency adsorbents for medical and healthcare applications
Oxygen concentrators are essential medical devices used to provide continuous oxygen therapy for patients with respiratory conditions such as COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Diseases), asthma, and post-COVID conditions. These systems rely on Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) technology, where zeolites play a crucial role by selectively adsorbing nitrogen from ambient air to deliver enriched oxygen.
Medical oxygen demand continues to grow due to the rise in respiratory diseases, an aging population, and the need to strengthen preparedness for health emergencies. In this context, oxygen concentrators play an essential role by providing a reliable source of oxygen for both emergency care and long-term respiratory treatments in hospitals, clinics, and home care settings around the world.
Arkema’s Nitroxy® range of synthetic zeolites is uniquely engineered to meet the demanding performance, size, and energy requirements of both stationary and portable oxygen concentrators.
How do zeolites work in oxygen concentrators?
Zeolites are crystalline aluminosilicates with precisely structured micropores that allow them to act as molecular sieves. In PSA-based oxygen concentrators, they adsorb nitrogen from compressed air, allowing oxygen to pass through.
The Pressure Swing Adsorption (PSA) process typically alternates between two adsorption columns packed with zeolites. As one column adsorbs nitrogen, the other is regenerated by depressurization. Advanced zeolites with high nitrogen selectivity and fast kinetics enable shorter PSA cycles, resulting in smaller machines, reduced power consumption, and faster oxygen delivery.
High-performance zeolites ensure:
- Efficient and selective nitrogen removal
- Fast adsorption/desorption cycles for high productivity
- Low power consumption, ideal for portable devices
- Increased life time with a stable performance over thousands of cycles
Zeolite selection directly impacts the oxygen concentration, flow rate, and energy efficiency of the device.
