Arkema Inc. will present the results of its recent study of the lubricant impact on the performance of R-449B, a new, lower global warming potential (GWP) refrigerant designed to replace R-404A refrigerant in commercial systems at the ASHRAE Winter Conference, to be held in Orlando, FL, Jan. 23-27, 2016, in coordination with the 2016 AHR Expo at the Orlando Convention Center.
The presentation, entitled: Energy Efficiency Performance of New Low-GWP Replacements for
R-404A as a Function of Lubricant Structure and Refrigerant/Lubricant Properties in a Commercial Refrigeration Unit, will be given by Arkema’s Laurent Abbas, Ph.D., R&D Manager for global applications development in Arkema’s Fluorochemicals business. The Arkema presentation will be a part of ASHRAE’s Seminar #16, entitled “Making the Commercialization of Low-GWP Refrigerants a Reality,” scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 24, 1:30-3:00pm at the Orlando Hilton hotel.
The ASHRAE seminar will focus on the lubrication component of changing refrigerants as part of the ongoing transition to lower global warming potential refrigerants, such as HFOs, that create a number of design and operational challenges to compressor and system builders.
In Dr. Abbas’s study, R-449B, a lower GWP alternative refrigerant to R-404A, is evaluated with several synthetic POE lubricants having different solution properties. The results of full system tests in a commercial refrigeration unit are correlated to the measured thermophysical properties and miscibility of the refrigerant/POE mixtures in order to determine the impact of refrigerant-lubricant mixture properties on system performance. R-449B is a non-flammable, class A1 replacement or retrofit for R-404A/R-22 in commercial refrigeration, low-temperature stand-alone equipment, and air conditioning equipment with a GWP of only 1296, a two-thirds reduction from R-404A.
