Biobased materials

Renewable raw materials represent a strategic opportunity both for the environment and for Arkema’s development. Building on its expertise in castor oil chemistry, the Group develops biobased products and materials derived from plants for wide-ranging markets (footwear, eyewear, cell phones, automotive parts, etc.).   

Biobased polymers and resins

Arkema offers a large number of biobased solutions, in particular derived from castor oil.

Rilsan® PA 11

 Rilsan® polyamide 11 (or PA11) is widely respected as a high performance resin for demanding applications. Processed from castor oil, this polymer is 100% biobased.

When first discovered, in the early 40’s, PA11 was used to make socks and bathing suits before branching out into countless applications in the automotive industry, oil production and sports. The Rilsan line has burgeoned since its debut, adding  fine powders for coatings, in addition to clear (Rilsan® Clear) and high temperature (Rilsan® HT) grades to the family tree. Today it is the most complete line of biosourced, high-performance polyamides available.


Through its timeless nature, Rilsan® looks towards the future more than ever.

Lighter than steel, aluminum and rubber, tough, and derived from the castor bean, Rilsan® polyamide is part of the lightweight trend in transportation materials and is a poster child for green chemical production.

Pebax® Rnew

Pebax® Rnew polyether block amide is a thermoplastic elastomer that is partly plant-based, extremely tough and demonstrates enduring elasticity even at very low temperature. It is extensively used in the manufacturing of ski boots and sports shoes (both cleated and non-cleated).

Platamid® copolyamides

As specialty thermoplastics, Platamid® copolyamides are used to manufacture hot melt adhesives for fusing textiles intended for clothing and industrial applications.

Altuglas® Rnew

Altuglas® Rnew transparent PMMA resins include biopolymers 100% produced from plant sugar. The fluidity of these technical alloys means they can be processed at low temperature and therefore benefit from a smaller carbon footprint. Applications of Altuglas® Rnew include electronics, consumer goods, optics and automotive.

Substances and additives

Biobased additives used in industrial and automotive lubricants.


The Sarbio® range marketed by Sartomer, an Arkema subsidiary, offers a wide range of acrylate and methacrylate monomers and oligomers, comprising, depending on the grades, 10 to 80% of renewable raw materials. These bioproducts are used in the formulation of varnishes, inks and coatings as well as adhesives.

Cecabase RT®

Used for the manufacture of warm bitumen mix, Cecabase RT® surfactant additives are synthesised from at least 50% vegetable oil. They help reduce dust emissions, lower the temperature at which the asphalt is laid, and so cut down energy consumption by up to 30% during road construction work.


Products from the Oleris® range are 100% of plant origin (castor oil). They have a very high purity (95 to 99%), contain no MGOs, are biodegradable, and comply with regulations. Finally, they are used for the synthesis of fragrances, aromas and cosmetics, as well as industrial lubricants and plasticisers.

VPS® et esterols sulfurisés

Derived from plant-based chemistry, VPS® sulfur-based additives from Arkema’s Thiochemicals business are used in particular in technical fluids for metalwork and in industrial and automotive lubricants.
