Fluorinated Polymers

The Arkema Group is the world leader in the production of PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) resins. This range of thermoplastic resins exhibits exceptional properties, in particular weathering resistance, chemical resistance, and superior mechanical properties in a wide range of temperatures. Arkema markets its production under the Kynar® brand.

Since the opening of the first Kynar® production plant in 1965 to serve applications in chemically stable industrial piping and in the insulation and sheathing of electric cables, the Kynar® range of fluoropolymers has grown so that it now includes a large number of grades designed for many end-products.


Kynar Flex® PVDF was launched in the early 80s with performance levels similar to the original Kynar® resin, while also exhibiting enhanced flexibility, a key feature for some specific applications.

Kynar 500®, a resin for high performance metal coatings

The Kynar 500® resin for coatings ensures a colorful and high quality finish to metal buildings. Highly recommended by many architects for providing durable finish and protection for walls of tall buildings and large industrial buildings, these resin-based high performance coatings are now used for the finishing and protection of aluminum window and storefront profiles.


With the development of a wide range of colors, textures and gloss available from our paint manufacturer trademark licensees, Kynar 500® based coatings are a common finish in buildings such as airports, shopping malls, banks, churches, sports stadiums, office buildings, hotels and restaurants.


The durability of Kynar 500® makes it an excellent choice for heat-reflecting metal roof coatings (cool roofing).

Kynar 500 anniversary

For the last 50 years, Kynar 500® resins for coatings have provided colorful and high quality finishes for metal buildings. These resin-based high performance coatings are recommended by top architects for their long-lasting protection for tall buildings and industrial structures.

Kynar Aquatec®, emulsions for high-performance alternative to acrylic latex

The Kynar Aquatec® waterborne emulsion provides an innovative, high-performance alternative to acrylic latex. It is particularly suitable to formulate waterborne reflective roof coatings, which save substantial amounts of energy (cool roofing). Arkema won France's Pierre Potier Prize for Innovation for its Kynar Aquatec® in 2010.

Strong resistance to chemicals

Some PVDF Kynar® grades are suited to injection molding and extrusion. They are commonly used in chemical engineering for transporting harsh chemicals. Kynar® PVDF is chemically resistant to halogens (chlorine, bromine, fluorine, iodine) and strong acids even at high temperatures.


They are also used for the manufacturing of films, especially for the protection of the backsheet of photovoltaic panels. Kynar® sheathed cables can be irradiated and used in temperatures up to 175°C. These cables are also well-known for being inherently flame resistant.

Customized use for each application

The Kynar® PVDF and Kynar Flex® PVDF resins are available in different forms:

  • pellets for easy handling in molding and extrusion processes,
  • fine powders for use in solutions or as additives in the manufacturing of high-performance composites.


In recent years, new high-performance Kynar® PVDF grades have been developed for use as a binder material in carbon electrodes for lithium ion batteries. Other grades are used for the manufacture of tough and lightweight foamed sheets for the construction industry.
