Innovation from developing renewable raw materials

Arkema’s R&D teams are exploring a number of avenues with the aim of increasing the use of renewable raw materials.

  • The recycling of glycerol (by-product of biodiesel manufacture) for which the economic environment will change completely as it becomes widely available from future biofuel plants. Arkema has already registered a number of patents relating to reactions using glycerol as raw material.

  • The development of new copolymers using diacids or dialcohols derived from vegetable products, e.g. technical copolymers such as Pebax®.

  • The use of agricultural ethanol, in particular for the manufacture of carbon nanotubes, replacing ethylene of petrochemical origin.

  • The development of solvents of agricultural origin in formulations combining the performance of traditional solvents with the environmental characteristics of "green" solvents for industrial degreasing and cleaning.
