Since its very beginnings, organic chemistry has developed primarily from oil, natural gas, and coal, all of which are fossil resources that have built up over millions of years, are nonrenewable, and are now being depleted. The future of chemistry therefore rests in part on the growing use of renewable raw materials of vegetable origin.
