Its excellent power to solubilize polymers and its low toxicity make Arkema’s DMSO a highly suitable solvent for the formulation of polymers such as polyethersulfones, polyurethanes

  • Reaction Solvent

In polymer synthesis or reactions, chemists have to use many solvents. They have to protect themselves from dangerous products and even with attention, accidents can occur. Health being the most important thing for the R&D people, Arkema provides them with a very effective, but also very safe solvent for all your polymer reactions: DMSO.

Polymer Synthesis

DMSO offers specific physico-chemical properties that ensure your safety

High dipolar moment
High dielectri constant

  →

Powerful solvent capacity

Intense cation solvation on the oxygen atom from the sulfoxide bond

  →

Increased reactivity for anions
 High boiling point

  →

Possibility of use over a wide range of temperatures
 Ease of recycling

  →

Possibility to recycle DMSO at the end of the reaction

DMSO is an efficient solvent in numerous types of polymerization reactions

Thanks to his high solvent power and capacity to solubilize polymers, DMSO is largely used as reaction solvent for:

 Polyacrylonitrile
 Polysulfone and Polyethersulfone
 Polyetherimide
 Polyurethane

  • Formulation Solvent

 DMSO: Excellent solvent for formulation

Different types of solvents are used in formulations. The difficulty is to find an effective but safe solvent that can be used widely, without any issue of compatibility, miscibility, ...

formulation solvent

DMSO combines many benefits to be used in various formulations :

DMSO solubilizes at room temperature a wide range of polymers: PAN, PS, PES, PEI, PAI, PVC, PVDF, epoxy resins, ...
By increasing of temperature, some polymers are soluble in DMSO. ( PMMA, PVA, ... ...)
DMSO is miscible with all common solvents such as aromatics, ketones, acetate, ... and allows to adjust polymer blend parameter (viscosity, freezing point, cost)
DMSO can be extracted from polymers by traditional methods well-known by worker. Solvent is recovered by dry or wet spinning. DMSO is completely miscible in water in all proportions and can be burnt easily.
Common applications for these polymers are solution casting process in the manufacturing of batteries, membranes, textile coating, ...

  • Cleaning Solvent

The high solubility of polymer and pre-polymer in DMSO is a strong advantage for reactor and lines cleaning. DMSO can be chosen in place of cheap but hazardous solvent such as chlorinated solvent, DMF or DMAc.
DMSO is already used as cleaning solvent for several polymers and pre-polymers.
