Retrofitting: Some Things to Remember

When retrofitting a system now using CFCs, you have two choices of refrigerant: HFCs or HCFCs. Which refrigerant you choose depends onseveral variables, including refrigerant and its efficiency, labor costs, lubricants, safety and environmental concerns. For example:

  • Permanent solution: Virtually all OEMs have identified HFCs as long-term refrigerants. Most new equipment is either being redesigned or adapted to be used with HFCs. HCFC based blends are intended as retrofit solutions to CFCs. Some new equipment is being designed to use HCFCblends. We recommend that HCFCs be limited to retrofit applications.Using HCFCs provides an easier solution when lubricant flushing causes the retrofit of system with HFCs to become too labor intensive.

  • Environmental awareness: All HCFCs have low ozone depletion potential (ODP). But HFCs have no ODP. As consumers become increasingly aware of environmental issues, many are choosing to only do business with firms seen as concerned about the environment.

  • Future availability: HCFCs are regulated and production may beeliminated by 2020 in the US and by 2015 in Europe. But HFCs are not regulated and are not scheduled for phaseout.

To make your retrofit as easy as possible, we'll provide all the technical support and information you'll need, as well as your choice ofrefrigerants.

Note:

Some original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) may have different lubricant, safety, or retrofit requirements. Consult OEM guidelines for details.
