Without treatments, paper would be highly absorbent, unwriteable and unprintable due to the capillarity and the surface of its tangle of cellulose fibers.
Two techniques with acrylic binders can be used to render the paperless hydrophilic (sizing) and to obtain a surface more receptive to writing and printing (coating).
Acrylic binders for coatings are copolymers of acrylates (BA, 2EHA, etc.) and acrylic acid with styrene.
Dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (MADAME) copolymerized with other (meth)acrylic or styrenic monomers is also useful for production of sizing binders. (Meth)acrylic acids and Methoxypolyethelene glycol Methacrylates (Norsocryl®405) are particularly of interest to prepare dispersing agents for fillers and opacifiers.
Cationic polyacrylamides containing cationic monomers (ADAMQUAT MC 80, ADAMQUAT BZ 80, MADQUAT MC 75) and Anionic polyacrylamide containing Acrylic Acid (AA) are largely used in the paper wet-end process as retention and drainage agents and dry/wet strength agents. Cationic polyacrylamides are also used as flocculants into the paper closed-water system.
