Rilsan® BioPlastic Qualified by Fujitsu for Personal Computer Components

12/21/2006

Rilsan® Polyamide 11 has been qualified by Fujitsu for personal computers and mobile phones components, as announced by the company in a press release from December 7th, 2006. Rilsan® polyamide 11 is a unique biobased, high performance polymer produced from renewable castor seeds, through a unique process developed by Arkema.

Many major Japanese electrical and electronics (e/e) companies have been working to introduce environmentally friendly biobased materials for e/e housings and components.  However, the brittleness, heat stability and longer injection molding cycle times of most available bioplastics have limited their market expansion into certain technical applications.

This time, Rilsan® has been qualified by Fujitsu with the support of Arkema global R&D centers (Kyoto Technical Center in Japan and Cerdato in France). Rilsan® Polyamide 11 is registered as a biobased polymer by Japan Organics Recycling Association (JORA), for specific components which require high resistance to repeated bending and excellent molding performance.

Widely used in the most demanding markets, Rilsan® PA11 uniquely combines properties like chemical, thermal and mechanical resistance and provides an outstanding level of versatility, durability and reliability for highly technical applications.

Arkema’s Technical Polymers serve the global transportation, electrical & electronics, sports, oil & gas, and other industrial and consumer markets.

With global brands like Rilsan®, Pebax® and Platamid®, unique products like Rilsan® Polyamide 11 biopolymer, and leading capacities in Rilsan® polyamide 11 and 12, Arkema’s Technical Polymers business unit stands out in the industry by providing its customers with global coverage and superior regional service from production facilities and research centers in Europe, Asia, and the USA.

A global chemical player, Arkema combines 3 related and integrated business segments: Vinyl Products, Industrial Chemicals, and Performance Products. Present in over 40 countries with 18,400 employees, Arkema achieves sales of 5.7 billion euros. With its 6 research centers in France, the United States and Japan, and internationally recognized brands, Arkema holds leadership positions in its principal markets.
