SDS – informing customers about product use
The Arkema group complies with the regulatory requirement to provide its customers with Safety Data Sheets (SDS) about its products. Arkema even goes beyond its regulatory requirements and provides safety data sheets for all of its products, whether classified as hazardous or not. These SDS are produced on the basis of information contained in a global regulatory database.
A global product database
The data included in the safety data sheets are extracted from a database containing the composition of all the products sold by the Group as well as their toxicological, ecotoxicological and physico-chemical characteristics. This centralization ensures data consistency throughout the world.
Thanks to a special software used with this database, it is possible to print the safety data sheets in the formats and languages of the countries where the products are sold – about 40 counties in all. Data are updated by Group experts in toxicology and ecotoxicology in conjunction with experts in regulatory affairs.
The QuickFDS platform allows the user to:
- consult online most SDS of the Arkema group,
- subscribe to automatic alerts about updates of SDS he’s interested in.
To respond the request of most of its customers, the Group has implemented a new service for the electronic transmission of its SDS as a substitution of paper sending
What exactly is a safety data sheet?
The (Material) Safety Data Sheet, or (M)SDS, is a regulatory document. In many countries, this document is required in order to receive authorization to sell chemical products classified as hazardous to human health and/or the environment.
The (M)SDS must contain the necessary information related to prevention and safety related to the use of a product. In addition to information about the product’s properties, it provides recommendations about storage, conditions of use, handling, elimination or destruction and the procedure in the event of an accident.
The SDS also contains information about the transportation of the product (hazard level, packaging groups) which is also included in the various labels. Information related to national or international regulations is also provided.
Customers are systematically provided with the SDS as from the first order and then for each significant update. The SDS must be updated and communicated again whenever there are new data related to the product’s hazards or a situation in which risk management measures may be impacted. The SDS is generally provided in the language of the country where the product is manufactured, used and stored.
For certain levels of registration, the REACH regulation (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of CHemicals) has introduced an obligation to add specific information to the standard SDS. For each type of use of the product, the manufacturer is required to provide exposure scenarios and to indicate the precautionary measures to be taken in order to reduce risk.
This new SDS format is referred to as an extended SDS (extended Safety Data Sheet). All users who receive an extended SDS must ensure that they use the product in accordance with the described conditions of use.
The implementation of a system - under the authority of the United Nations - to harmonize the classification of chemical products at a global level, the globally harmonized system of classification and labelling for chemicals (GHS) is tending to standardize the format of safety data sheets.
