Local residents – local actions

The Arkema group has a regular, local relationship with residents near its industrial sites. Every year Arkema involves them a little more in discovery and open dialog initiatives.

Common Ground initiatives

The Arkema group intensified its local communication program. In 2014, 985 Common Ground® initiatives were organized, and 90% of sites took an active part in these events.

In France for example, the Arkema group partners the Palais de la découverte. The partnership, launched in 2011, will continue until 2015. A state-of-the art chemistry laboratory was installed to offer a programme of experiments and presentations entitled “Étonnante Chimie” (Amazing chemistry). Every year, almost ten thousand visitors can discover, in an entertaining and interactive mode, the contribution of chemistry to sustainable progress through presentations given by the scientific mediators of Palais de la découverte on the basis of the Arkema group’s innovations.

Viewing industrial sites through the eyes of Chinese children

In the fall of 2008, the production site for oxygenated water in Shanghai welcomed children from the nearby primary school Cao Hang as well the children of the facility’s personnel. The children visited the production units, laboratories and a control room. Following the visit, a drawing contest was organized on the theme of “A factory seen through the eyes of a child”.
Fifty drawings were collected and 18 of them were selected and then reproduced on one of the facility’s walls.

The drawing is exposed in large format (1m x 1.5m) on the white wall surrounding the industrial site

Inter-company commuting plan for the Lyon region

The Arkema group sites based in the southern part of the Lyon area  – the factories at Pierre-Bénite the Rhône-Alpes research center and the Shared Services Center – are participating concretely in the implementation of Agenda 21.
The purpose of their initiative is to define an inter-company commuting plan for the 6,000 employees in the so-called Chemistry Valley of Lyon. The aim of this plan is to reduce the environmental impact of commutes between home and work.
