Environmental issues related to paints, coatings and adhesives

Moving to eco-sustainable paints
At present, the manufacturing of paints primarily utilizes oil-based solvents. However, the use of these solvents is beginning to be restricted by policies aimed at reducing VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions. Solvent-free, water-based and powder paints are being developed and the Group is supporting this trend by offering eco-sustainable products to its customers. These include:
- Waterborne ENCOR® acrylic emulsions and Synaqua® alkyd resins for coating formulations used for wood, metal, etc.
- SNAP®nanostructured polymers which give paints for buildings their satin or gloss finish
- Celocor®opaque acrylic polymers which partially replace titanium dioxide (Ti02), an indispensable but costly pigment in paints. Celocor® improves the hiding power of paints and optimizes their production cost
- Coatex rheology additives which are used to adjust the viscosity and dispersion of acrylic paints (EcodisTM, CoadisTM, CoapurTM, RheotechTM)
- Norsocryl® acrylic monomers used to produce resins and waterbased dispersions for paints and coatings.
Synaqua® 4804: for “green” paints … which come in all colors!
Thanks to the Synaqua® 4804 resin, it is possible to formulate solvent-free water-based paints which are as glossy and resistant as traditional paints with solvents. Made from raw materials of plant origin, Synaqua® 4804 makes it possible to produce paints with a very low VOC level. It has been awarded the European eco-label.
In the coatings market the growing demand for products respectful of the environment is accompanied by ever more stringent requirements related to durability and thermal insulation. The Group fully meets these expectations with its product offering of high performance coatings and additives, including in particular the Kynar® PVDF resins, Orgasol® polyamide powders and Crayvallac® waxes.
Kynar 500®: a 50-year legacy
For 50 years, Kynar 500® high-performance PVDF resin coatings have been protecting some of the most notable buildings around the globe, from industrial and commercial complexes to residential roofing. Kynar 500® architectural coatings have left a lasting impression, protecting metal from weathering, aging, chalking and pitting, while helping to retain gloss and keep colors bright.
Arkema continues the innovation, introducing Kynar 500® FSF® coatings that build on a legacy architects have known and trusted for the last five decades. The patented manufacturing process was developed to comply with voluntary EPA recommendations.
The process ensures Arkema’s fluorosurfactants are used to safeguard the environment without sacrificing the quality and protection formulators have come to know from Kynar 500® PVDF coatings.
Long life adhesion
To ensure the resistance, longevity and insulation of coating systems, Sartomer, a subsidiary of the Arkema group, produces and markets a complete range of special acrylate oligomers and monomers for UV Curing (instantaneous drying of liquid coatings or acrylic resin-based inks by ultraviolet rays). These low level VOC products make it possible to apply high quality coatings on all types of substrates (paper, wood, plastic, fiberglass, etc.).
Sarbio®: sustainable raw materials within the very heart of UV Curing coatings
The new Sarbio® acrylates and methacrylates produced by Sartomer are made from renewable raw materials and are used as reactive diluents for the formulation of UV coatings and inks. They enable formulators to produce very high quality coatings with a high level of technical performance, while also preserving the environment.
