Environmental issues related to paints, coatings and adhesives
The Arkema group has become one of the leading global suppliers of coatings, paints and adhesives. Its innovative high performance products are used to manufacture paints, coatings and adhesives that are respectful of the environment.
The Arkema group constantly expands its offering and has now become one of the leading global suppliers to the paints, coatings and adhesives markets. These sectors are characterized by strong demand for products which are respectful of the environment, tough and durable.
Moving to eco-sustainable paints
At present, the manufacturing of paints primarily utilizes oil-based solvents. However, the use of these solvents is beginning to be restricted by policies aimed at reducing VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions.
Solvent-free, water-based and powder paints are being developed and the Group is supporting this trend by offering eco-sustainable products to its customers. These include:
- Waterborne ENCOR®acrylic emulsions and Synaqua®alkyd resins for coating formulations used for wood, metal, etc.
- SNAP® nanostructured polymers which give paints for buildings their satin or gloss finish
- Celocor® opaque acrylic polymers which partially replace titanium dioxide (Ti02), an indispensable but costly pigment in paints. Celocor® improves the hiding power of paints and optimizes their production cost
- Coatex rheology additives which are used to adjust the viscosity and dispersion of acrylic paints (Ecodis™, Coadis™, Coapur™, Rheotech™)
- Norsocryl® acrylic monomers used to produce resins and waterbased dispersions for paints and coatings.
Synaqua® 4804: for “green” paints … which come in all colors!
Thanks to the Synaqua® 4804 resin, it is possible to formulate solvent-free water-based paints which are as glossy and resistant as traditional paints with solvents. Made from raw materials of plant origin, Synaqua® 4804 makes it possible to produce paints with a very low VOC level. It has been awarded the European eco-label.
In the coatings market, growing demand for environmentally sound products implies ever more stringent requirements in terms of durability and thermal insulation. With its high performance coatings range, in particular Kynar® PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) resins, Orgasol® polyamide powders, and Crayvallac® waxes, the group fully addresses these expectations.
Kynar 500®: a 50-year legacy
For 50 years, Kynar 500® PVDF resin coatings have been protecting some of the most notable buildings around the globe, as well as industrial and commercial complexes and residential roofing.
Kynar 500® architectural coatings are durable and protect metal from corrosion and weathering. They also help retain gloss and keep colors bright.
Arkema continues the innovation, introducing Kynar 500® FSF® coatings that build on a legacy architects have known and trusted for the last five decades. The patented manufacturing process for this resin was developed to comply with United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommendations. It provides formulators and architects with fluorinated coatings that are environmentally sound, without sacrificing the quality of the protection which formulators and architects have come to expect from them.
Long life adhesion
To ensure the resistance, longevity and insulation of coating systems, Sartomer, a subsidiary of the Arkema group, produces and markets a complete range of specialty acrylate oligomers and monomers for UV curing (instantaneous drying of liquid coatings or acrylic resin-based inks by ultraviolet rays). These low VOC products make it possible to apply high quality coatings on all types of substrates (paper, wood, plastic, fiberglass, etc.) while protecting the environment. Products include the new Sarbio® range manufactured from renewable raw materials and used as reactive diluents.
For low-energy buildings, emitting fewer air pollutants, for energy-efficient transports, more comfortable and fitted with better soundproofing, for ever safer packaging or hygiene and consumer products, Arkema develops cutting-edge bonding products and technologies, in particular through its subsidiaries Bostik (n°3 in the world for glues and adhesives) and AEC Polymers.
Its diverse product range comprises high added value products and technologies: hotmelt, high strength or pressure sensitive glues, flexible, transparent or repositionable adhesives, sealants or assembly joints, etc.
