Food industry and agrochemicals

Basket of fruits and vegetables

With leading positions in specialty chemicals, the Arkema group is becoming a key player on the high potential animal nutrition market. It also offers high performance products for the protection of fruit and vegetable crops as well as for the filtration of drinks.

Feeding the planet today presents a three-fold challenge: the population explosion with 9 billion humans expected in 2050, food safety and the protection of the environment. The Arkema group provides its contribution in three major world markets:

  • animal nutrition, with the production of methionine, a sulfur-containing amino acid which is widely used in this sector, especially in Asia
  • crop protection, with a new soil fumigation product which is very efficient and respectful of the environment
  • drinks, with natural and highly effective filtration products

Largest bio-methionine plant in the world

Number one in the world in thiochemicals (sulphur-based products), the Arkema group produces methyl mercaptan, an indispensible compound for the production of methionine, which is widely used in Asia for feeding poultry. It has established a partnership with the Korean firm CheilJedang (CJ group), the world leader in industrial biotechnology, in order to jointly produce the first methionine made from the biofermentation of renewable raw materials (bio-methionine).

Key figures

2,400 people were involved in the success of Kerteh.

Location: Kerteh, Malaysia

Investment: ~€220 million

Start date: January 2015

Production: 80,000 tons of bio-methionine per year for animal nutrition

Partners: Arkema group and CheilJedang (CJ) group

Solutions for agriculture and the environment

Soil fumigation is necessary to protect vegetables from soilborne pests (nematodes, disease pathogens) and weeds. However, methyl bromide, the traditional fumigation agent, is now subject to regulatory restrictions due to its effect on the ozone layer. As a result, it will gradually disappear.

The Arkema group is therefore developing a new agent made from a sulfur derivative (dimethyl disulfide or DMDS), which is naturally present in the environment.

Focus on... Paladin® and Accolade®

Paladin® and Accolade® are designed to protect vegetable and fruit crops. It is especially effective against nematode parasites and weeds. It does not have any impact on the ozone layer and quickly breaks down in the atmosphere.

The DMDS for soil fumigation has already been approved in the folliwing countries: the United States, Israel, Morocco,Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, Egypt, Mexcio and Korea.

Filter aids dedicated to food industry

A subsidiary of the Arkema group, Ceca is one of the leading global producers of:

  • activated carbon under the Acticarbone® brand, and made from wood
  • diatomite and perlite-based filter aids (filtration additives) under the Clarcel® brand, and made from minerals

Its products are mainly used as filtration and purification agents for beverages (wine, beer and soft drinks) and in the food industry (sugar, cooking oil, etc.).
