Air conditioning and refrigeration - meeting regulatory requirements

The refrigeration and air conditioning markets are constantly being transformed due to changing regulations related to the fight against the destruction of the ozone layer and global warming. The Arkema group has always anticipated these changes and has developed new fluids to reduce the impact on the environment.

The Arkema group is the world’s co-leader in fluorinated gases and has a complete range of refrigerant fluids. Its products are designed for low and medium temperature air conditioning and refrigeration systems (industrial, commercial, domestic and public transportation).

Producing cold while also reducing the impact on the planet

HCFCs (Hydrochlorofluorocarbons), a second generation gas, will be permanently banned in cooling systems in Europe as from January 1st, 2015 due to their impact on the ozone layer. In order to replace HCFCs, the Arkema group provides a wide range of so-called third generation refrigerants: Forane® HFCs (hydrofluorocarbons). They are more respectful of the environment, and their ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential – an index measuring the potential for the destruction of the ozone layer) is zero. Recently, Forane® 407A was added to the European range of products. It has a GWP (Global Warming Potential – an index measuring the influence on the greenhouse effect) twice as low the existing HFC R-404A and R-507A.

In addition, the Group is dedicating significant resources to its R&D in order to develop fourth generation cooling liquids, i.e. HFOs (HydroFluoroOlefins), which are remarkable because of their energy efficiency and very low GWP.

Forane®: HFC refrigerants are replacing HCFCs

Non-toxic and non-inflammable, Forane® HFCs have performance levels identical to HCFCs which are to be banned in Europe as from 2015. They can be used for a wide range of temperatures and do not require any changes to existing installations.

While waiting for the commercialization of HFOs, the HFC-based Forane® range covers the needs of all markets:

  • domestic, commercial and industrial refrigeration
  • domestic and commercial air conditioning, heat pumps
  • automotive air conditioning
  • transport refrigeration

Forane® 427A : keeping Parmesan in a cool place

Modena Terminal decided to use the HFC Forane® 427A refrigerant liquid to upgrade its cold storage rooms which now use HCFC R22, thereby ensuring compliance with existing legislation. This company operates one of the largest refrigerated warehouses in Italy, in Modena (near Bologna), where Parmesan and meat are stored. Forane® 427A is the only refrigerant fluid which can replace R22 without the need to change the existing installations.
